2021 Domaine Amélie & Charles Sparr Riesling Altenbourg

2021 Domaine Amélie & Charles Sparr Riesling Altenbourg

We have a fantastic deal on Alsatian Riesling today via the 2021 Domaine Amélie & Charles Sparr Altenbourg. This is a beautiful dry Alsace Riesling from one of the region’s most exciting young estates, founded in 2017 by Charles Sparr, a 12th-generation member of the Sparr family, and Amélie, from the Barmès-Buecher winemaking family. Sourced from 60 to 70-year-old biodynamically grown estate vines on limestone soils in Kientzheim at roughly 750 feet of altitude, the south-facing Altenbourg lieu-dit lies just below the grand cru Furstentum. It has some serious pedigree and site definition at this price point, and the domaine’s handling only sharpens that further with full-cluster pressing, indigenous yeast fermentation, and 18 months on the fine lees in tank. The 2021 is a vintage in Alsace admired for its freshness, verve, and bright acidity, and this fully captures those aspects and is an especially compelling example that creates a great dynamic between perfectly ripe fruit with lemon, white peach, and pear, with floral blossoms, silky texture, and a long, mouth-watering, mineral-tinged finish. We all love Trimbach and Zind-Humbrecht, but prices have really gone up, and this is a great alternative that flies below the radar and is a stellar buy at this special price and happens to be some of the only bottles available in the US!

James Suckling 94 pts! The enveloping nose of ripe pear pulls you inexorably into this generous dry riesling that marries ample fruit with a wonderful freshness. Very long, crisp and chalky finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

Vinous (Anne Krebiehl MW) 93 pts! The 2021 Riesling Altenbourg is from 60- to 70-year-old vines, vinified in stainless steel. It is very shy on the nose, yet there is a suggestion of coolness and lemon focus. The palate confirms this with beautifully streamlined zestiness, edged with textured lemon pith and cool, cool limestone depth. A baby right now, but full of precision and clarity - a real and bone-dry promise. (Bone-dry) (Drink between 2027 - 2050)
