2022 Bass Phillip Chardonnay Estate

2022 Bass Phillip Chardonnay Estate

These are the last bottles we have at an excellent discounted price on Bass Phillip Chardonnay, one of the best examples in the Southern Hemisphere, made by Jean-Marie Fourrier, of Domaine Fourrier fame in Gervrey-Chambertin. Established in 1979 by Phillip Jones Bass, Philips is a renowned Australian winery in Victoria's Gippsland region. Known for its exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the winery has garnered acclaim for its organic and biodynamic farming practices, setting it apart in the Australian wine scene and drawing the attention of one of Gevrey-Chambertin's top winemakers, Jean-Marie Fourrier, who took over as winemaker in 2020. Spanning approximately 10 hectares, the vineyard's unique microclimate, coupled with minimal-intervention winemaking, yields wines that truly express their terroir. The focus on low yields and careful vineyard management has been a cornerstone of Bass Phillip's philosophy, aiming to produce wines of high complexity and longevity.

Jean-Marie Fourrier loves working in Australia because he can do two harvests a year, thanks to the seasonal differences: one in Burgundy and one in Australia, which allows him to hone his skills even further. Jean-Marie completed the 2022 vintage from start to finish, using the same principles he follows at Domaine Fourrier in Burgundy. The vines for the estate Chardonnay are 40+ years old and have been farmed biodynamically since 1993. There is uncanny purity to this wine, with lovely aromas of white flowers, stone fruits, liquid minerals, and a fantastic savory component. The palate is equally exceptional, with yellow fruit flavors dominating, tons of dry extract, salinity, and lingering notes of exotic fruits. This is a must-try if you love classic European-inspired Chardonnay from the new or old world, and it is a fantastic buy at this closeout pricing. Don’t miss these last bottles!

James Suckling 95 points! "Generous aromas of lemon confit, orange zest, flint and puff pastry. The palate is medium-bodied with a creamy texture and vibrant acidity, giving notes of limes, grapefruit pith, olive brine and chalk. Quite oxidative, but very well balanced and generous. Drink or hold."
