2016 Domaine Lafarge-Vial Fleurie Clos Vernay
John Gilman 92+ In the 2016 vintage, the Lafarges’ Bel Air bottling in Fleurie was fully pts! wiped out from hail, but both the other Fleurie lieux à dits farmed by the family were not hailed upon. The 2016 Clos Vernay is a very fine and quite black fruity young wine, wafting from the glass in a complex blend of dark berries, woodsmoke, gamebird, a superb base of quite stony soil tones and a fine touch of upper register spices. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, long and beautifully focused, with a good core, lovely length and grip and just a touch of backend tannin perking up the finish. A fine bottle of Fleurie that will age very, very well. (Drink between 2018 - 2035)
Burghound 92 pts! A markedly more complex if not more elegant combination offers up notes of both red and dark raspberry that are cut with hints of earth and pepper. There is more volume and intensity to the concentrated and serious medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a mildly austere finish that is notably longer. This is excellent and well-worth considering. (Drink starting 2024)
