2016 Paul Bara Champagne Grand Cru Special Club

2016 Paul Bara Champagne Grand Cru Special Club

Paul Bara is Bouzy grower royalty, and the family has worked these south-facing chalk slopes for generations. As members of the Club Trésors de Champagne, they bottle “Spécial Club” only in great vintages that pass two independent, peer-blind tastings and is one of the favorites of the Special Club lineup. 2016 marries Bouzy’s Pinot-Noir drive (about 70%, with 30% Chardonnay) to the vintage’s classical cut with primary fermentations in steel, full malolactic for harmony, then a long rest on lees and a precise 6 g/L Brut finish. In the glass, you get red-toned orchard fruit and wild strawberry, mint, pastry, and crushed chalk, carried by a fine, persistent bead and a mouth-watering, saline close. It’s a characterful snapshot of house and terroir, already thrilling at the table and set to cruise comfortably through the decade. It’s a beautiful example ranking among the best of all time for the Bara Special Club and a top buy at this low pricing!

Antonio Galloni 93 points! "Bara's 2016 Brut Special Club is a fine choice for drinking today, as it offers a good bit of aromatic and flavor complexity to match its mid-weight personality. Dried pear, crushed rocks, mint, dried flowers, spice and red-toned fruit meld together. Brisk acids pull it all together on the finish. Dosage is 6 grams per liter. Disgorged: February 2024"
