This wine is a single vineyard wine from an estate located in Italy’s Marche region, very close to the Adriatic Sea. This is 100% Montepulciano grape from 30-year-old vines that are densely planted and farmed sustainably. The vineyard is planted between 750- and 1250-feet elevation and the soil are a very deep-calcareous clay loam. The grapes are lightly pressed, with the free run juice going into stainless steel tanks. There they are fermented then moved into large neutral oak foundres (about 50%) with the balance being moved into 4 to 5-year-old oak barrels. This wine spends about 12 months on the healthy lees, where it is then racked and assembled in tank and spends several months before bottling. The wine is then held in bottle in their cellars for another year before it’s released. This is a serious wine for the money and a great 2015 vintage. It rivals many $30+ Tuscan reds. The wine has lovely aromas of black cherry, plum, violets, under brush and minerals. One the palate cherry, and plum flavors dominate with a touch of cocoa, minerals, a savory component, and some spice nuances. The wine is complimented by wonderful acidity that keeps it fresh and focused. This would be an incredible Tuesday night pizza wine, but has the stunning to stand up to osso bucco, game, or richer dishes. A serious Italian red for $16!
