2020 Domaine du Chateau de Meursault Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes-Dessus
We have a late release of the Meursault Charmes Dessus, which is a selection from the upper, more prime part of the vineyard and the best Charmes made here. This large Domaine in Meursault was always an excellent buy in the past, and with new owners and a large cash infusion a few years back, the quality skyrocketed. The new owners replaced the old wine-making equipment, cut yields in half, and started farming sustainably. These changes are evident, and we have had great success with many vintages of this wine, and this Cuvee was a stand-out when we tried it a few years back and is showing even better now. As mentioned, Charmes-Dessus is an excellent location at the top of the Les Charmes vineyard, connecting to Les Perrières, and is prime Premier Cru territory. This bottle has consistently been one of the best buys for Charmes over the past few years, and 2020 is one of the best examples from Chateau de Meursault of all time. This has entered a nice window for enjoyment and will continue to age very well for at least another decade. A rarer find with only a small amount ever imported to the US, we have a limited number coming from the domaine in perfect condition.
Jasper Morris 92-95 points! "A pure even lemon yellow. The bouquet has a class which the straight bottling cannot aspire to. I keep going back to it. To have this class while retaining the body of a fine Charmes is impressive. A broad base of pure white fruit, perhaps just a touch too oaky for the moment, but that is the house style. Drink from 2030-2037. Tasted: October 2023."
Burghound 92-94 points! "This is also aromatically exceptionally pretty with its even more floral array of white orchard fruit, including a whiff of passion fruit, just sliced fennel and an interesting hint of crushed mint leaf. The dense, delicious and caressing medium-bodied flavors also possess a gorgeous texture, all wrapped in a bone-dry, tightly wound and striking long finale. This excellent and well-balanced effort is also very much built for extended keeping. Recommended."
