2023 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Charmes

The Charmes is one of our favorites from Bertheau, and it's a beautiful wine that captures the ultra-elegance of the Chambolle and the estate. We've been working directly with Bertheau almost since the very beginning of Envoyer and have tried many vintages during that time. Bertheau is one of Burgundy's most elegant producers, working with one of the most elegant Terroirs in Burgundy, Chambolle-Musigny. As the adage goes, the depth of color doesn't equate to Burgundy's quality, and these ruby-red masterpieces have that old-school knack of gaining weight in the bottle while retaining their terroir transparency and lightness of touch. We have had the pleasure of tasting with Francois many times, and he takes a very traditional approach to his vinification, using older barrels with minimal intervention, preferring hands-off winemaking, and allowing his wines to develop slowly. The 2023s are impressive even in their young state, accounting for some of the best wines made here. It's an excellent vintage for Beartheau, showing excellent harmony between lovely fruit and expressive vineyard character. Bertheau's Charmes comes from a small .66 hectare plot where the vines are over 50 years old and grow on excellent limestone soils. It's one of the most highly regarded vineyards in Chambolle, and at this direct import pricing, it's a fantastic buy with a nice new note from Burghound. This is right there with some of the best Charmes of the vintage and comes in at a bit lower pricing, making it a top buy for Chambolle Charmes once again!

 


Burghound 91-93 points! "Here the nose is sufficiently reduced as to offer nothing of interest to report. By contrast, there is excellent punch and freshness on the palate of the slightly more voluminous and more mineral-driven flavors that possess all the intrinsic refinement of a classic Charmes while exhibiting focused power on the rich, firm and youthfully austere finale. Though the first two wines could, in a pinch anyway, be enjoyed young, here the structure is sufficiently firm and prominent that at least a few years of patience are recommended. (Drink starting 2031)"
