2023 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges 375ml

The 2023 Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges is a terrific village Burgundy from one of the reference-point estates of the appellation, a domaine whose modern history began in 1920 and whose family has long been associated with maintaining Nuits-Saint-Georges's serious, cellar-worthy style for which the village is known. In 2023, Burgundy’s reds emerged with generous fruit, charm, and slightly brighter acidity than 2022, and that profile should suit Gouges especially well, giving this wine the estate’s usual structure and savory character while allowing more early appeal than some sterner vintages, which will be especially true in this smaller bottle. Expect a classic Nuits-Saint-Georges with dark cherry, plum, earth, spice, and a touch of sauvage grip, all carried by fine tannins and a firm mineral backbone. This is a great find in a half bottle, and a particularly smart buy for anyone who wants the pedigree of Gouges in a format that doesn't take as much time to come around and is far more convenient to drink!

John Gilman 91 points! "I was surprised to learn that the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits bottling above had been raised in more new oak this year than the Nuits St. Georges villages, as this cuvée only saw ten percent new barrels this year. The wine is very refined on the nose, wafting from the glass in a mix of cassis, bitter chocolate, currant leaf, venison, a complex base of dark soil tones, woodsmoke, just a touch of oak and a floral topnote redolent of peonies. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with an excellent core of black fruit, moderate tannins and a long, complex and soil-driven finish. I love the balance and backend grip on this wine."

Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy) 91 points! "Bright mid purple. A heady ripe nose, tastes like a sunnier year despite not picking late and keeping a sensible degree. Plenty of energy on the palate, fresh plums and vivid dark raspberries, with good length. Bottled in September."
