2023 Domaine Vincent and Sophie Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot
The 2023 Moregeot from Vincent and Sophie Morey is easily the best buy for premier cru white burgundy this vintage, and we have low pricing on a limited amount arriving next month. It's a great wine for clients looking for a cellar-worthy white Burgundy from a classic address, and the wines here have been some of the best buys over the years, with quality at an all-time high. Vincent and Sophie Morey both come from long winegrowing families, Vincent trained at the Lycée Viticole in Beaune and worked in Saint Émilion before returning to Bernard Morey in 1986 while Sophie made her first vintage the same year in Santenay, and the couple launched their own domaine in 2006 with a first harvest in 2007, continuing what the local Chassagne registry describes as a 10th generation family tradition. Their Morgeot is a small holding at just 0.8 acres, planted in 1973, 1982, and 2008, on very clay-heavy soils with southeast exposure near the abbey of Morgeot at about 690 feet elevation, and it is an early ripening site that is typically picked first. The Chardonnay here is farmed with sustainable and organic practices, hand harvested, and raised entirely in barrel with a meaningful share of new oak, then bottled in mid-August, which fits the domaine’s classical but serious style. The 2023 Burgundy vintage, as many know, brought a large crop and broad success for lush whites with plenty of early appeal and energy, creating a lovely dynamic, and this bottling should play right into the vintage with Morgeot’s clay-rich profile naturally giving depth, structure, and richness. This is a tightly built Chassagne with real substance that can be enjoyed now but still has a very good aging potential. It's an outlier for the category, where we rarely see sub-$100 pricing, making this one of the best buys of the vintage and a bottle not to miss for White Burgundy fans!
Burghound 91 points! "Slightly more evident wood is present on the expressive nose that freely reveals its aromas of white orchard fruit compote, citrus confit and a variety of floral wisps. There is again excellent volume and richness to the vibrant and overtly powerful medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the clean, dry and robust though not really rustic finale. Worth considering if your taste runs to big and bold whites."
