2023 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Canet

2023 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Canet

The 2023 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ-Canet is a benchmark Puligny from one of the village’s classic addresses and one of the best premier crus from the Domaine, this vintage even on par with the En Richarde, which goes for quite a bit more. Now led by Émilie and Benoît Riffault, who farm organically with biodynamic principles, this iconic estate continues to make some of the best, most exciting white Burgundies out there. Champ-Canet sits mid-slope on the Meursault border with thin, stony limestone that is known for energy and focus. Hand-picked Chardonnay is whole-cluster pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts, then raised about a year in 228-liter barrels with a discreet share of new oak before a short settling in tank to sharpen the line. The vintage’s ripe-but-bright profile shows here perfectly with excellent concentration as well. 2023 has the potential to be the best example of Champ Canet here of all time and is most certainly a bottle not to miss for fans of Sauzet, especially at this low pricing!

Jasper Morris MW (Inside Burgundy) 93-96 points! "A fine mid lemon colour. Discretion continues to be the Sauzet watchword. The Champ Canet has the ideal balance between the concentration of white fruit flesh, acidity, nuance and length. The fruit ripples over a bed of minerals. Very compelling."

Vinous (Neil Martin) 93-95 points! "The 2023 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Canet 1er Cru showed more reduction on the nose, yet there is clearly a lot of intensity here. It's slightly more resinous than its peers, containing touches of melted candle wax and lanolin. The palate is well balanced and poised, with a keen silver thread of acidity and real energy building toward an assertive and complex finish. It is far superior to the 2022 when I tasted it last year. This is superb."
