2023 Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie La Landonne
One of the top winemakers in Côte-Rôtie, René Rostaing, is a classic producer who could be considered the region's poster child. He inherited vines in some of the best locations in the Côte-Rotie from his great winemaking family members, including his beloved Côte Blonde, Côte Brune, and, of course, La Landonne, which accounts for some of the best wines in the Côte-Rotie each year. These compete with some of the top in the region, and the La Landonne is neck and neck with the Guigal version this vintage, at half the price too, making it a fantastic buy for this top vineyard. La Landonne is the best wine from Rostaing this vintage and a superb example of this classic Côte-Rotie terroir, which sees lots of iron oxide and sand in the soil. 100% Syrah, Rostiang's portion of this vineyard features vines well over 60 years old and upwards of 100 years old in some sections. It's an outstanding example from Rostaing with the structure that will last for decades in the cellar. We have incredible pricing today on a limited amount, and it's the top buy for La Landonne this vintage once again!
Jeb Dunnuck 96-98 points! "A rocking bouquet of red and blue fruits, smoke, and violets defines the 2023 Côte Rôtie La Landonne, which comes from one of the greatest terroirs for Syrah in the world, the La Landonne lieu-dit situated in the heart of Côte Rôtie. Classic in every way with its rich, layered, yet regal style, it's medium to full-bodied and has a smoking good mid-palate and sweet yet building tannins. It's another magical wine from this estate that readers would love to have in their cellar.<!--more-->One of the reference points for Côte Rôtie, Domaine Rostaing is now firmly in the hands of Pierre Rostaing, who continues the legacy of his father René. Farming is sustainable, and winemaking remains traditional, with full destemming (there might be a stem or two in some of these) and élevage in a mix of larger older and new French oak, with the new wood kept to a minimum. The range includes the classic Côte Rôtie Ampodium, which blends multiple parcels, as well as single lieu-dit bottlings from La Landonne, Côte Blonde, Côte Brune, and Le Viallière. A Condrieu and a Collines Rhodaniennes Syrah (Les Lézardes) round out the lineup."
Vinous 94-96 points! "Vinified with 100% whole clusters, the 2023 Côte-Rôtie La Landonne is dark and alluring, opening with black cherry compote, black plum, crushed violet and graphite alongside stemmy traits. Touching the medium- to full-bodied palate with intense flavor concentration neatly balanced by lifting freshness, the complex 2023 gracefully makes its exit with an elongated, refined finale. Rostaing fans better watch out for this one—it might even outperform the terrific 2022 I tasted alongside."
